Non-technical, solo founder of GoodToGoOut, a style community currently focused on helping its users get fast advice and second opinions on online apparel and accessory purchases.
With GTGO we want to create tools to help our users achieve their style goals and create easier interactions, with greater value, between themselves and the people that can help them realize these goals, whether they be friends, other individuals in the GTGO community, brands or retailers.
I'm currently in the very early stages of working on learning Ruby on my path towards learning to use Ruby on Rails and hopefully soon becoming a developer in my own right.

Low-Hanging Fruit for User Discovery In A Social App w/o Showing Number of Actual Users That's not a bad idea at all. I was thinking of just hiding it, but a threshold could be something for now. Actually, maybe it's best just to hide the number next to all users and then allow the same search ability that is available at the profile page via clicking on an element to be present via entering text into a search field.... |

Any good resources for, or examples of, good ways to present 'new user tips'? Thanks for sending along an answer! I remember that actually. I wish I could add pictures to show what I have now, because it's somewhat along those lines, but unfortunately my rep isn't high enough. |
