Thanks, the approach is nice but not applicable when a program does not have subcommands (i.e. they should already do something even when invoked without any options).

Thanks for the input. Not all programs use subcommands, so #1 is not applicable everywhere. As for programs that have subcommands, when run without any arguments I like them mostly to print the list of available (or popular) subcommands, so that's a rather different help message.
