I agree with you @Yallow, and a bit too with JonW. Probably the way to go is to find a decent balance between giving users a good experience and not allowing them to abuse the options they have. As for the embedding options, I think I'll just allow uploading images and posting links and that's it. If someone really wants to show a video they'll have to post the link to it. Thanks for the answer!

Great tip about using Imgur as a 3d party image hoster, I didn't even know it was possible. I'm considering it now, it's either that or doing the whole hosting myself. But you're right, making the user do that would just disencourage form posting images at all

@MarjanVenema well, posts would last a certain time and then "die", so copyright wouldn't be much of an issue. Besides, no one really cares about copyrighted images

Thanks man, before I read this post I didn't even considered the server capacity of handling multiple people at once. I'll look into that seven plus or minus two thing

Thanks for your answer! Yes, you could say that the instant messaging is a feature of a bigger system (a community/forum kind of thing). And I agree with you, not making a limit is the best possibility, but beyond a certain number of people (perhaps beyond 50) it stops behaving like a conversation and turns into a broadcast where only a few are actually saying something or everyone is talking at the same time, that's what I'm trying to avoid

I particularly don't like the whole "Login with Facebook/OpenID/Twitter/Google". But it's a matter of choice. I do agree on that if one is planning on making a mandatory login, all those services should be allowed
