Designing a setting screen for an application on iPad in a modal where some nested screens require login to enter. I would like to get an opinion on how unnatural it may seem for a user if a sign up screen is placed before drill down but not shown when returning to top level?

If you ask why modal, it just seems to me better to explore settings in a modal if top level option are narrow (only 3 list options) for a full screen. So if I have say a notification page which needs login, am I over thinking just hide this page after user logs in and taps back, show a completely separate modal context for the login, surpress back button and just apply done to save and close, or should I just accept full screen?
