I need to design a dashboard for customers of commercial company. The dashboard should mainly present the customer's products, recent transactions, provide the option to pay his/her monthly bill and suggest promotions.

There was an idea to design a customized dashboard so the user will choose the information that will be presented on his/her dashboard.

I will be very happy to receive any reference for the advantages and disadvantages of customized dashboard (e.g. My Yahoo)

You need to be more specific, dashboards have their benefits and disadvantages. Do some research and if there any specific questions about advantages or disadvantages post them here. – Mervin Sep 11 '12 at 19:53

Allowing users to customize dashboards is a big challenge. I would need to know more about this app, but 90% of the time your app has a specific purpose and the dashboard should present the most important data and functions for the user. Allowing the user to customize a dashboard presents huge UI challenges and potential performance problems, not to mention the support headaches when each user is looking at something different.

Most users want to get in and get out. Yahoo being funded by ad revenue want users to stay and do everything possible, plus they will rarely directly support a user, AND they have a bazillion dollars to work with.

My two cents, be the expert, give the user exactly what they need. Customizable dashboards are the answer for stakeholders who don't know their users or can't make the tough design decisions.
