User Experience Stack Exchange is a question and answer site for user experience researchers and experts. It's 100% free, no registration required.

I need to draw attention to a tab in certain use cases. What icon in a tab can I use to represent "Attention", and the icon is neither an exclamation mark, star, or asterisk?
On our site, I am currently using this iconography (not within a tab):

  • an exclamation mark for alerts
  • a 5 point star for users to mark something as important
  • Additionally, an asterisk is used on a related (but different) site to draw attention. I've been told I cannot use the asterisk.

Alternatively, maybe there is a different way to draw attention to the tab without an icon? However, we do have a limited color palette to choose from.

Since this is a tab, the icon needs to be understandable in a small size.

Hi Micaela, I'm afraid that as per our faq, questions requesting icon suggestions are off topic for this site. – JonW Aug 15 '12 at 17:36
