User Experience Stack Exchange is a question and answer site for user experience researchers and experts. It's 100% free, no registration required.

Is it possible to create a button with only the shadings... (e.g. Photoshop: Bevel & Emboss, Drop Shadow etc.)

...and then place that button on top of another graphical element, e.g. a green square and get the effect of a nice shaded green button?

The big win is that then I could have my app users personalize the color of the buttons.

Anybody heard of this technique before and have some tips?

This is certainly possible, and actually quite popular—the Wufoo guys did a post on buttons like this. I use a similar technique for most of our customers too. I'm not sure how this is a user experience question, though. If you're looking for technical implementation advice, your best bet is Stack Overflow. – Kit Grose Jun 30 '12 at 14:21
This belongs on Graphic Design. – Vitaly Mijiritsky Jun 30 '12 at 14:40
I don't quite get what's being asked. – Cameron Martin Jun 30 '12 at 14:46
I've closed this question for the time being so that you can tighten up what your actual question is. i.e. is it a photoshop technique you're after, is it some web design CSS advice, are you just looking for examples of this being used? Depending on what the question is it may belong on a different stackexchange site, or it may be generally off-topic, but until we know what you're actually asking for there's not much we can do to help you at the moment. You can edit this question with the 'edit' link under the question. – JonW Jun 30 '12 at 18:34
I'm sorry, now I found the GraphicDesign.stackexchange.com, maybe remove this post? – Cotten Jul 1 '12 at 15:59

Yes !, The typo3 CMS application uses the same effect, but , they use it for the entire page as a theme. Am not able to find the demo page right now. But , i will update soon as i find it.

What they have done is, they have created a mark with brush , during installation they ask you to choose color of web page. After installation , the masked brush will look in a contrast to the website color that u have chosen. Its a simple powerful design concept.

Hope that helps! :)
