The guys behind Gumby framework have added the hybrid (12+16 columns) grid.

Which means on the same page you can have the 2 systems that cohabit at the same time.

What about the the design homogeneity? Do you think merging both systems into 1 hybrid is going to decrease/break the visual appealing/structure of a website/webapp?

FYI here is the philosophy behind gumby framework

hmm... I do wonder if this would be more suitable at Webmasters.SE – AndroidHustle Jun 5 '12 at 11:09
"Best Grid system" is just asking for opinions. If you have a more specific question about the use of 12 vs 16 grids that could work, but as the answers indicate there's not a universal "best" so there's no real answer. – Ben Brocka Jun 5 '12 at 13:10
well no it's not for webmasters. My question is about the aesthetic/UX issue of combining 2 grids system (12col & 16cols) at the same time, on the same page. – Marc D Jun 6 '12 at 6:44

This is an odd question, since we do not know what problem you're trying to solve. And I think that's the real issue here. First you need to decide what the grid is for, the intended audience, tasks or actions that could take place within the grid.

Given this input, my answer would be as few columns as possible to make your intended audience view and/or complete tasks without the loss of valuable information to make the correct action and/or desicion. Think less is more.

The best grid system really depends on the needs of the site. If you want have a harden grid system with a predefined width, the regular 960gs 12/16/12+16 all work great. If you want to make you site more responsive to mobile viewers then look into the fluid 960 grid system.

For my companies internal development, we are currently using a hybrid system of 12+16. This is because all of our development team (20+) all have different requirements and allows the most flexibility based on customer screen needs.
