I'm looking for some good examples of social networking based websites that have great designs:

  • What to make the homepage
  • Browsing users
  • Showing profiles
  • Searching for users or information
  • Search forms: how to design filtering of users based on some criteria

My current project is stagnant on the design stage, and I am looking for some great inspiration in social networking designs, so I can hopefully incorporate some good elements and ways of design into my own application.

Social networking has become a really broad topic - can you be more specific about the site's intentions? What type of community? How do they interact? – peteorpeter Feb 23 '12 at 18:11
Just a sort off regular social networking site with friends profiles, search members etc nothing fancy or special so far but its on a niche, users can send just messages like on Facebook for example ( without any advanced stuff like IM) – Rubytastic Feb 23 '12 at 18:39 offers a world of options and templates. Have you looked at them? – Taj Moore Feb 23 '12 at 18:51
Try dribbble searching the profile tag: – Max Feb 23 '12 at 22:28

I would recommend you spend a weekend reading couple of these books - 1. Gamification by design - Zichermann 2. Designing Social Interfaces -Erin Malone

You would start with a blue-sky thinking and there are various examples in the book that will guide you to understand and get inspiration.

This should be a better starting point.

Hope you agree.
