Specifically, I'm looking for examples of UX where the designer has used a design that is successful in 1 context in another, inappropriate context!

I'm not sure this question is well suited for our Q&A format (since it's more of a poll) but here's some general info about how copying designs isn't always a great idea: uxmyths.com/post/718217318/… . Copy inspiration, not designs :) – Ben Brocka Feb 5 '12 at 16:47
Not a great QA but could be an intriguing community wiki question. – DA01 Feb 5 '12 at 22:41
@DA01 by default SE sites don't accept polls as CW anymore, though Apple.SE allows polls I guess. Perhaps we should consider if we want some of the more interesting "polls" as CW questions or not – Ben Brocka Feb 5 '12 at 22:56
I like that idea. – DA01 Feb 6 '12 at 1:36
@DA01 I've been talking about this with Apple.SE people, they just let "the good" polls in. Perhaps next time there's a "good" poll we should bring it up in chat/meta to see if there's a consensus on a single, particularly interesting and potentially valuable poll question. – Ben Brocka Feb 6 '12 at 16:12
